Sea Turtles on a Treadmill

Florida Atlantic University studied sea-turtle babies to understand the effects of artificial lights on how successful they are in making from the beach where they are born to the sea. It seemed that it was taking them longer than it should. So researchers put a hundred and fifty of them on treadmills with lots of light. After that, the turtles were put into a tank of water to see how well they swam.

The results seemed to show that turtles rested more after prolonged walking. The researchers concluded that turtles do indeed get distracted by unnatural amounts of light. The study confirmed the usefulness of lighting ordinances on beaches. The study was published in the Journal of Experimental Biology.
