Underwater Horse Treadmill

Regular readers of Home-Treadmill.com will not be surprised that people use treadmills underwater or that they put horses on treadmills. But perhaps you have never heard of underwater horse treadmills.

In humans, treadmills with the user’s lower body underwater are primarily used for rehabilitation from injuries. However, since horse racing is such a big money sport, researchers at University of Calgary and Washington State University got the idea that maybe water treadmills could be used for training for competitive purposes.

Fifteen horses were put on water treadmills and the speeds and water levels were varied. Then breathing and heart rates were measured. It turns out that the higher the water level, up to a point, the more effective it is for conditioning horses at slow speeds.
